A first for Wales ………………..and only the second library in the UK to host an opera
Dinas Powys Library and Activity Centre are joining up with Opera in Situ to hold two operatic events in October 2017. In advance of this a very successful evening was enjoyed by both groups in the Library on Sunday 18th June.

Opera in Situ was formed at the very end of 2015 with the aim of performing opera in places where it may not normally be performed and to audiences who may not otherwise hear it. Above all they want the music to be accessible. Many of the members of this group were involved in performances in Dinas Powys a few years ago but they have also now been joined by some young singers from The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

On Sunday, we enjoyed scenes from opera's including Humperdinck’s ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and Jonathan Dove's ‘Pinocchio’, among others.

Opera in situ and the Library both need to raise funds to keep going and they would both love to see children enjoying these performances, accordingly a children's opera will be staged in the Parish Hall on Friday 27th October followed by a fun filled evening for the adults including an opera and a fish and chip supper.

Please look out for tickets as we expect them to go very quickly.

The 'Every child a library member' scheme

Chris Franks writes:
The Community Library was delighted to welcome year 4 pupils as a part of the ‘Every child a library member’ scheme. Each year 4 pupil received a special library card along with bag for library books. There was a question and answer session and the children raised a range of suggestions to improve what is on offer. The Community Library is now run by volunteers and is very keen to develop links across the community. Here’s the children of St Andrews and Dinas Powys Primary Schools along with fellow Library trustee Keith Hatton (and Volunteer Angela Wing in one picture) and myself as they are about to choose their books.

Evening of Music

The first large scale fundraiser for Dinas Powys Community Library on Friday 24 March 2017 in the Parish Hall exceeded all expectations. The evening of music was a sell out.

The night saw Emyr Wyn Jones a baritone accompanied by Conal Bembridge Sayers on the piano perform a varied and enjoyable repertoire.

Both had studied at the Welsh College of Music and Drama. Music included Vagabond, Der Gartnes, Bright is the Ring, Pan Ddaw’s Nos, Some Enchanted Evening, Dafydd y Garren Wen and Captain Stratt.

The Community Library is developing and is offering more to young and old. Come along and see what’s on offer.
